About the “Windows protected your PC” warning

When you open the installer, Windows may show a blue box that says Windows protected your PC, sometimes with the publisher listed as Unknown publisher. This is Microsoft Defender SmartScreen. It can appear for a new app that Windows hasn't seen often enough to recognise, and it doesn't say anything about what the app does. If the installer isn't code-signed, Windows can't show who published it. Even a signed installer can still trigger the warning until it has built up a reputation with Windows.

An illustration of the warning. The real one may look slightly different on your PC.

To continue

  1. Click “More info”It's a small link under the message. The app name and publisher appear.
  2. Check the file nameIt should be the installer you just downloaded from this page.
  3. Click “Run anyway”If your PC offers it, the installer then starts as normal. On a work or school PC, an administrator may have turned this option off. Ask them, or use a personal PC.

Only do this for an installer you downloaded from this page. If you'd rather wait, that's fine. Signing the installer lets Windows show who published it, but we can't promise the warning will never appear.

What you'll need

  • Windows 10 and 11. There's no Mac or phone version.
  • An Instagram account. You log in to Instagram in a window that FeedSaver opens, and it saves what your account can see. We never receive your password. We recommend a second Instagram account rather than your main one.
  • Space for what you save. Photos are small, but video-heavy accounts can take several gigabytes.
